 Boy racer behaviour improves

Hundreds of arrests and dozens of cars seized but boy racer behaviour improved say Chch police after weekend blitz
Christchurch police say despite making more than 500 arrests, the behaviour of boy racers over the weekend was actually better than in the past.
Thousands of people were in the city for a car show, prompting a combined operation involving police, Land Transport New Zealand and Ministry of Justice staff. Operation Hornet resulted in 520 tickets being issued, 36 cars seized for unpaid fines and 31 vehicles taken off the road because they were too dangerous.
Canterbury road policing manager Inspector Derek Erasmus says police noted drivers were better behaved and the roads were quieter than during previous operations. He says normally police impound between 15 and 20 cars for offences such as illegal street racing or burnouts, but this weekend only two cars were seized for those offences.
Mr Erasmus says around $5,000 worth of unpaid fines was collected as a number of drivers settled their debts on the spot.
