The Crown says teenager Liberty Templeman was indecently assaulted, beaten, then left to drown in a Kerikeri stream
The High Court in Whangarei has heard how a Kerikeri teenager was brutally beaten and left to drown.
A 16-year-old with name suppression is accused of the murder and indecent assault of Liberty Templeman, whose body was found in the Wairoa Stream in Kerikeri on November 2, 2008.
Crown prosecutor Mike Smith has told the court the accused attacked Liberty, ripped open her clothing, beat her until she was unconscious, then left her to drown in the stream.
The Crown alleges the accused was present at a gathering she attended in Kerikeri that weekend.
It is the first time that details of her death have been revealed.
Details of many of the young witnesses in the case have been suppressed. The first witness has told Mr Smith that Liberty had returned to Kerikeri to visit friends that weekend, several weeks after her family had moved to Auckland.
