Councillor supports anti-knife laws
 9 February 2010
Alf Filipaina, Manukau City Council, supports judge's suggestion to make it an offence to carry a knife without reasonable excuse
A South Auckland councillor supports a review of laws surrounding knife possession.

Ministry of Justice officials will look at making it an offence to carry a knife without reasonable excuse after a suggestion by Auckland High Court Judge Raynor Asher.

Manukau City Councillor Alf Filipaina says there is no reason to carry knives on the streets and the argument that they are needed because others are carrying them cannot be justified. He says that attitude sees people getting seriously injured or killed.

A report on the issue is expected to be given to the government by the end of the month.
